How to Make Homemade Guacamole [Healthy, Easy, & Kid Friendly]

Everyone needs a classic & simple Guacamole recipe in their repertoire. This version is perfect to add to your taco Tuesday spread, or just to eat by the chip-full. It’s not too spicy, so kids will love it too.

For me, guacamole isn’t guacamole without some basics … my must haves are avocadoes (obviously!), salt, garlic, & lime. The fresh lime juice breaks down the avocadoes for the perfect creamy consistency, making them easy to mash up into a thick paste.

Foodie Tip! Citrus fruits, like lemons & limes, should be rolled between your hand & the counter for about 30 seconds. It will loosen up the fibers & you’ll feel it soften as you work it. Then cut the fruit in half & run through a citrus press – you’ll get a lot more juice this way! And don’t be afrait to buy in bulk – you can freeze citrus fruits whole to be thawed & zested or juiced later. Wash them well before freezing & microwave in 30 second increments to thaw.

I also love to have some vegetables chopped up & thrown in my guacamole. A hearty tomato & a bit of red onion add robust texture & flavor to the creamy mashed avocadoes.

Last step before the final mix & taste is to add some seasoning! Fresh cilantro is a must, along with black pepper, ground cumin, & just a hint of cayenne powder.

Did you make this guacamole! What did you think about it?? I really appreciate all of your feedback & I love seeing your creations. Please leave a review & comment below. And don’t forget to take a quick pic of your creation & tag This & That on Instagram or Facebook.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes
Course Appetizer, Sauce, Side Dish
Cuisine American, Mexican
Servings 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 Large or 6 Mini Avocados
  • 1 large Tomato optional
  • 1/2 small Red Onion optional (about 1/4 c diced)
  • 1 Lime
  • ½ bunch of Cilantro finely chopped
  • ¾ t Garlic Powder
  • ½ t Sea Salt
  • 1/2 t Cumin ground
  • ¼ t Black Pepper
  • 1/16 t Cayenne Powder

Instructions

  • Cut the avocados in half & remove the pits. Reserve one pit if you plan to store the guacamole to be used later. Using a small knife, hold an avocado half in one hand (by the skin) & carefully cut a grid pattern into the flesh. Scoop the flesh out into a medium bowl. Continue until all of the avocado has been scooped out.
  • Before you cut the line, roll it between your hand & the counter for 30 seconds to loosen the fibers. Juice half of the lime over the chopped avocado. Using a fork, mash the avocado to your desired consistency. I like to leave some chunks whole but mash the majority into a thick paste. Add more lime juice as needed to achieve desired consistency & taste.
  • Chop the tomatoes into small/medium diced pieces, removing the juicy parts. Dice the onion into small pieces. Finely dice the jalapeño; remove most of the seeds & membrane. Add the tomatoes, onion, & jalapeno to the mashed avocado. Add half of the chopped cilantro & all of the seasonings. Gently stir everything to combine.
  • Taste & add more cilantro + seasonings if preferred. Store with 1 pit for freshness. Use within 3-5 days.
  • Enjoy!
